Along with the development of our education, today most universities have offered various electives for students to choose and study。 However, some people claim that these elective courses have very little effect on spreading knowledge and students’ development because what students concern about when choosing electives are so different。

There are various kinds of reasons for choosing electives and I list some in here。 Primarily, the most important and wide factor students concern about is the teachers of the courses。 Instead considering the quality of the teacher, or the form or style of the teacher will take or act in the course, they just want to make sure that the teacher they choose will never keep trace of their attendance and let them fail in their exams。 In addition, a large number of students choose their elective courses aiming to get a high score but never consider what they will learn and how to apply to it。 What’s worse, some students choose their electives just they are forced by their schools’ institution demand and their score need。

As far as I am concerned, I advocate that the most important thing we should concern about when choosing electives is our personal interests。 The most worthy meaning for these electives is to broaden our horizon and extend our knowledge as much as possible and to complement our major and compulsory courses。 Therefore, what electives we choose should be in accordance with our interests and our career planning instead of aiming to make high score or pass the exam。

Nowadays a growing number of people, especially the 20s or 30s, tend to stay indoors for most of their spare time, especially on holidays. Some spend the majority of the time online chatting, blogging, shopping, dating or playing computer games. Some sit with their eyes glued to the television screen, day and night. People’s opinions vary when it comes to this way of killing time. A great number of people maintain that staying indoors is cheap, comfortable, and most importantly, very safe. Others, however, frown upon staying indoors for too long. They are worried that lack of physical exercise and face-to-face communication with others will do harm to people’s body and mind. Personally, I don’t think staying indoors for most of the day should be advocated. Instead, people in all ages, their physical conditions permitting, should be encouraged to spend more time outdoors. The brilliant sunshine, the pleasant green space, the interactions with other people, etc. are all good for people’s health, both physically and psychologically.

The seats in our school reading-room are not enough for all the students. In order to "seize" a seat, I go there very early every morning. Just because of this, a special story happened to me one day. I learned a lesson in the reading-room that I will remember all my life.

It took place on a Monday morning in October. After occupying a seat in the reading-room, I went to fetch a bottle of boiled water. When I returned to the reading-room, I found that a girl student was sitting on my seat. Immediately I ran to her and shouted at her angrily, "Why have you taken my seat? Go away.!" Everybody in the reading-room looked up from their books at me unfriendly. At once I brushed with shame. I rushed out of the reading-room with my book. I can never forget those "eyes".

This is the lesson I've learned in the reading-room: I shall respect other people.

Manypeopledieformoney,lieformoney,fightformoney,andevenselltheirsoulstotheDevilformoney.

My strongest memory of Christmas will always bound up with1) a certain little cat.I first saw her when I was called to see one of Mrs.Ainsworth’ dogs, and I looked in some surprise at the furry2) black creature sitting before the fire.“I didn’t know you had a cat,”I said.

The lady smiled.“We haven’t,this is Debbie,at least that’s what we call her. She’s a es here two or three times a week and we give her some food.I don’t know where she lives but I believe she spends a lot of her time around one of the farms along the road.”

As I watched she turned, crept soundlessly from the room and was gone.“That’s always the way with Debbie,”Mrs.Ainsworth laughed.“She never stays more than ten minutes or so,then she’s off.”

Mrs.Ainsworth was a plumpish3),pleasant-faced woman in her forties and the kind of client veterinary4) surgeons dream of --well-off ,generous, and the owner of three cosseted5) Basset hounds. And it only needed the habitually mournful expression of one of the dogs to deepen a little and I was round there posthaste.

So my visits to the Ainsworth home were frequent but undemanding, and I had ample opportunity to look out for the little cat that had intrigued me.On one occasion I spotted her nibbling daintily from a saucer at the kitchen door.As I watched she turned and almost floated on light footsteps into the hall and then through the lounge6) door. The three Bassets were already in residence draped snoring on the fireside rug,but they seemed to be used to Debbie.

Debbie sat among them in her usual posture:upright, intent, gazing absorbedly into the glowing coals. This time I tried to make friends with her.I approached her carefully but she leaned away as I stretched out7) my hand. However,by patient wheedling and soft talk I managed to touch her and gently stroke her cheek with one finger. There was a moment when she responded by putting her head on one side and rubbing back against my hand, but soon she was ready to leave.Once outside the house she darted quickly along the road then through a gap in a hedge, and the last I saw was the little black figure flitting over the rain-swept grass of a field.

It must have been nearly three months before I heard from Ainsworth, and in fact I had begun to wonder at the Bassets’ long symptomless run when she came on the phone.

It was Christmas morning and she was apologetic.“Mr.Herriot,I’m so sorry to bother you today of all days.I should think you want a rest at Christmas like anybody else.”But her natural politeness could not hide the distress in her voice.

“Please don’t worry about that,”I said.“Which one is it this time?”

“It’s not one of the dogs.It’s...Debbie.”

“Debbie?She’s at your house now?”

“Yes...but there’s something wrong.Please come quickly.”

Mrs.Ainsworth’s home was lavishly decorated with tinsel and holly, rows of drinks stood on the sideboard and the rich aroma of turkey and sage-and-onion stuffing wafted from the kitchen. But her eyes were full of pain as she led me through to the lounge.

Debbie was there all right, but this time everything was different. She wasn’t sitting upright in her usual position;she was stretched quite motion less on her side, and huddle close to her lay a tiny black kitten.

I looked down in bewilderment.“What’s happened here?”

“It’s the strangest thing,”Mrs.Ainsworth replied.“I haven’t seen her for several weeks then she came in about two hours ago--sort of staggered into the kitchen, and she was carrying the kitten in her mouth. She took it through the lounge and laid it on the rug,and at first I was amused. But I could see all was not well because she sat as she usually does, but for a long time--over an hour--then she lay down like this and she hasn’t moved.”

I knelt on the rug and passed my hand over Debbie’s neck and ribs. She was thinner than ever, her fur dirty and mud-caked.She did not resist as I gently opened her mouth,a knell sounded in my mind.

Mrs.Ainsworth’s voice seemed to come from afar.“Is she ill,Mr.Herriot?”

I hesitated.“Yes...yes,I’m afraid so.She has a malignant growth.”I stood up.“There’s absolutely nothing you can do.I’m sorry.”

Mrs.Ainsworth reached out and lifted the bedraggled black morsel. She smoothed her finger along the muddy fur and the tiny mouth opened in a soundless miaow.“Isn’t it strange? She was dying and she brought her kitten here. And on Christmas Day.”

The tears had dried on Mrs.Ainsworth’s cheeks and she was bright-eyed as she looked at me.“I’ve never had a cat before,”she said.

I smiled.“Well it looks as though you’ve got one now.”

And she certainly had.The kitten grew rapidly into a sleek, handsome cat with a boisterous8) nature which earned him the name of Buster. On my visits I watched his development with delight.

As I looked at him,a picture of health and contentment,my mind went back to his mother. Was it too much to think that that dying little creature, with the last of her strength, had carried her kitten to the only haven of comfort and warmth she had ever known in the hope that it would be cared for there?Maybe it was.

But it seemed I wasn’t the only one with such fancies.Mrs.Ainsworth turned to me and though she was smiling her eyes were wistful9).“Debbie would be pleased,”she said.

I nodded.“Yes,she would...It was just a year ago today she brought him, wasn’t it?”

“That’s right.”She hugged Buster to her again.“The best Christmas present I ever had.”

Nowadays, some universitystudents own a company before their graduation. People have different opinionsconcerning this issue and the heated discussions are right on their way. In myopinion of the view, I do not advocate that students have a company beforetheir graduation.

There are reasons accounting formy view. First, to manage a company needs a lot of time and energy, which wouldinfluence students’ study. The most important thing for students is to learnsomething and practice their ability of thinking independently, instead of earningmoney. Therefore, I advocate students spend more time to learn and think sothat they can find their way to live. Second, having a company beforegraduation is not good for students’ psychological health. Those who have acompany before their graduation are most those who are born with a sliver spoonin mouth. If they are allowed to have a company before their graduation, theywill never worry about their job losing and family supporting; never know howto make a living by themselves; and never want to be independent from theirparents or other relationships.

In short, I do not advocatestudents have a company before graduation, especially with the help of theirrelationships. But I appreciate those who own their companies by their ownefforts.

College Pressure

I see two kinds of pressure working on college students today: economic pressure, parental pressure. It is easy to look around for rebels-- to blame the colleges for charging too much money, the parents for pushing their children too far. But there are no rebels, only victims.

The pressure is heavy on students who just want to graduate and get a job. If I were an employer I would rather employ graduates who have this range and curiosity than those who narrowly pursued safe subjects and high grades. I know incalculable students whose inquiring minds cheer me. I like to hear the play of their ideas. I don‘t know if they are getting A or C, and I don‘t care. I also like them as people. The country needs them, and they will find satisfying jobs. I tell them to relax. They can‘t.

Nor can I blame them. They live in a brutal economy.Today it is not unusual for a student, even if he works part time at college and full time during the summer, to increase to 5, 000 in loans after graduation. Encouraged at commencemerit to go forth into the world, he is already behind as he goes forth. How could he not feel under pressure throughout college to prepare for this day of reckoning?

Along with economic pressure goes parental pressure.Inevitably, the two are deeply integrated.

Poor students! They are caught in one of the oldest webs of love and duty and guilt. The parents mean well: they are trying to steer their sons and daughters toward a secure future. But the sons and daughters want to major in history or classics or philosophy-- subjects with no "practical" value.Where‘s the payoff on the humanities? It‘s not easy to persuade such loving parents that the humanities do indeed pay off. The intellectual faculties developed by studying subjects like history and classics are just the faculties that make creative leaders in business or almost any general field.

Luckily for me, most of them got into their field by an indirect route, to their surprise, after many roundabout ways. The students are startled. They can hardly conceive of a career that was not preplanned. They can hardly imagine allowing the hand of God or chance to nudge them down some unforeseen trail.

It has been admitted that mother's love is the greatest, because they give birth to us and never ask anything from us. Some people take this kind of love for granted. They do many things to hurt the one who loves them most. How can we do this? I just want to say that before our mother becomes old, we still can do things to treat them well.

When we were kids, it was our mother that companied us all the time, and they took care of everything. The common problem for the kids is picky about the food. It is one of the annoyed problems for mothers. According to the news report, a mother who was from America was annoyed by this problem all the time, so she learned to make the food with all kinds of cartoon images. When her child saw them, he was so happy and ate up the food.

A mother can do everything to make her children be happy. Though my mother couldn't do all kinds of delicious food for me, she tries hard to make me eat more. When I hear some people complain about their parents, I feel sorry for them, because they don't know the meaning of gratitude.

The other day I went to the park。 And unexpectedly I found in a deserted eorner, a cheerytree in full bloom, just like the kind of flowers I used to see in my former school, Xian Jiaotong University, light pink in color。 To my delight, a sense of familiarity welled up in my mind。 At the same time I could not kelp sighing that life is just like the cheery flowers, beautiful but transient。

True to my prediction, in the afternoon I ran to the park。 There was nothing left but the tender twigs。 The flowers fell thick on the ground as if the spring wind were also sad about it and would not bring itself to blow on them and left them scattered everywhere。

Fortunately outside it is a beautiful world。 The snow whitepear flowers were glistening as if they were blooming in your face, The roses and peonies were all in bloom, vying silently with each other for beauty。 Spring is really the best season of the year。

Do you check your smartphone frequently? Do you feel distracted if your smartphone is not with you? When there’s no Wi-Fi or signal for your smartphone, will you get irritated? If you say yes, then you’ve got addiction to smartphones. Smartphone addiction is a phenomenon that causes a lot of troubles to people.

In the first place, it may cause some problems to your health, such as visual fatigue, cervical spondylosis, and even neurasthenia. A friend of mine suffers from a serious spine collapse due to her addiction to the smartphone during pregnancy.

Secondly, if you keep playing with your phone when you are with your friends or family, you will spend less time talking to them. In fact, it is they who need and deserve to be cared for.

Lastly, an excessive reliance on smartphones may weaken your interpersonal skills. When you cannot find a place, you consult your GPS instead of consulting local people. You spare more time playing mobile games than playing real games with real people. As time passes, it’s possible that you may have difficulty in communicating with people.

Therefore, isn’t it better to get rid of smartphone addiction?
